💴 Paying in China — recap
- Almost everything is QR pay via Alipay / WeChat — link a foreign Visa / Mastercard.
- Carry a little cash (RMB) as backup; keep receipts (发票) for expenses.
- ATMs at big banks (Bank of China, ICBC) dispense RMB to foreign cards.
Before you arrive 出发前
China's internet and payment systems work differently. Ten minutes of prep at home makes everything smooth. Most of this cannot be fixed after you land, so set it up first.
🛂 Fill the digital Arrival Card before you fly
Since Nov 2025 most foreign visitors must submit China's digital Arrival Card — an entry declaration (passport, flight, hotel address, purpose). You can complete it online up to 3 days (72 h) before arrival; doing it at home lets you skip the airport queues.
- After submitting, screenshot the QR code it generates — you show it at immigration, and there's no internet in the immigration hall.
- It's free — use only the official NIA site, or the WeChat / Alipay "arrival card" mini-program. Avoid third-party sites that charge a fee.
- Ran out of time? You can still fill it at self-service kiosks on arrival — just allow 5–15 extra minutes.
Official National Immigration Administration (NIA) form. A separate card is needed for each entry, and it can't be edited after submitting.
🌐 Get connected — eSIM, SIM or roaming
China's firewall blocks Google, WhatsApp, Gmail, Instagram and Google Maps on local networks. An international roaming eSIM is the simplest fix — it routes traffic through servers outside China, so your usual apps work with no separate VPN. Install the QR profile at home, then switch on data roaming after you land.
- Trip.com eSIM — a favourite among visitors here: supports Google Maps / WhatsApp, daily or total-data plans, 24-hour billing, activated by QR. Easy and well-reviewed.
- Other solid options: Holafly (unlimited), Nomad / Jetpac (value & reliability), Airalo / Saily (budget).
- Phone doesn't support eSIM? Buy a physical SIM before you travel, or on arrival at the airport baggage-claim area — counters there sell tourist SIMs (bring your passport).
- Home-carrier roaming — many operators sell international day-passes. Convenient (keeps your own number), but usually pricier than an eSIM; confirm it covers China with unblocked access.
- Keep your home SIM active for SMS codes (banks, 2FA, WeChat verification).
- A stopover in Hong Kong / Macau / Taiwan is also a valid eSIM-install window.
🔒 VPN — your backup, installed before you fly
The eSIM above is the main plan. The VPN is what saves you when you end up on hotel Wi-Fi, a Chinese SIM or a colleague's hotspot — on those networks Google, Gmail and WhatsApp are blocked again. Install it, pay for it and test it at home: the app is not in the Chinese App Store and the provider's site is hard to reach from inside the country.

- One account works on iOS, Android, Windows, macOS and Linux, several devices at the same time. Sign-up is anonymous — no personal details required.
- Do it in this order, at home: create the account → pay → install the app → connect once to confirm it works. On Android the app is a direct APK download, so allow that install before you travel.
- ¥9.90 is roughly one coffee — worth carrying even if you never switch it on.

💬 WeChat 微信
China's everything-app: messaging, your NIDE host will reach you here. Also does payments. Register before you travel (needs an SMS code, sometimes a friend to help verify). You can link a foreign Visa / Mastercard for WeChat Pay.
💳 Alipay 支付宝
The most foreigner-friendly payment app — link a foreign card directly and pay almost anywhere by QR. Bonus: it has a built-in translator, a DiDi ride mini-program, and a metro/bus ride code. If you install only one payment app, make it this one.
🗺️ Amap 高德地图 (Gaode)
The maps app that actually works in China (Google Maps is unreliable here). Has an English mode. Apple Maps also works acceptably. Amap includes taxi/DiDi hailing and live transit.
🚕 DiDi 滴滴出行
China's Uber. Standalone app has English, or hail rides inside Alipay / WeChat / Amap without a separate account. Pay by linked card — no cash, no haggling.
🚄 Trip.com & Railway 12306
Trip.com (English) for booking trains, hotels and flights. 12306 is the official railway app and now supports foreign passports — you board high-speed trains with your passport, no paper ticket.
🈳 Translation backup
Google Translate is unreliable inside China — download the offline Chinese pack at home. Or use Baidu Translate / Microsoft Translator, or the translate button inside Alipay. Camera-translate menus and signs is a lifesaver.
💴 How payment works here
- China is cashless by QR — Alipay / WeChat cover 95% of situations, including street stalls.
- Foreign Visa / Mastercard / Amex can now be linked to both apps (since 2023).
- Carry a little cash (RMB) as backup — it's still legal tender and occasionally needed.
- Physical foreign cards are accepted at big hotels and the airport, rarely elsewhere.
Getting to NIDE 如何到达
Most guests fly into Shanghai, then take the high-speed train to Ningbo. Coordinate arrival details with your host — NIDE can often arrange a car.
🚄 High-speed train (recommended)
50+ trains a day run Shanghai Hongqiao → Ningbo, roughly 1h35m–2h30m, about ¥58–172 in 2nd class. Board with your passport.
🚕 DiDi or taxi (easiest)
From central Ningbo to the factory in Beilun is about 30–45 min by car. Order a DiDi (in the app or inside Alipay — English, cashless): type the destination "Ningbo NIDE Technology", or drop the pin on the address / show the driver the Chinese card above.
🚇 Metro Line 1 (budget option)
Metro Line 1 runs east from the centre into Beilun. Ride toward Xiapu (霞浦) and get off around Daqi (大碶) — the district where NIDE sits — then take a short DiDi/taxi to Wohushan Road. Slower but very cheap.

Ningbo is easy and safe to get around. Everything below is cashless once your Alipay / WeChat is set up.
🚕 DiDi 滴滴 — go-to for door-to-door
Cheap, safe, cashless ride-hailing. No need to install a separate app — open the DiDi mini-program right inside Alipay (also in WeChat / Amap): search "DiDi", set your pin, confirm, and it charges automatically. English available.
🧭 Plan any trip in Amap 高德地图
Amap does more than show a map — type your destination and it lays out the exact route by DiDi or by public transport: which metro line or bus, which station to get on and off, transfers, the walking bits, plus time and fare. The clearest way to see how to get anywhere in Ningbo.
🚇 Metro 宁波地铁
Clean, fast, signed in English, running roughly 06:00–23:00. Eight lines in 2026. Line 2 connects Lishe Airport and Ningbo Railway Station; Line 1 crosses the city east into Beilun.
- To pay: open Alipay or WeChat → search the Ningbo transport / metro ride code → scan at the gate. No separate card needed.
- Or buy a token from the English-menu machines (keep it to exit).
🚌 Bus
Extensive and ¥2-ish a ride, but stops and announcements are mostly Chinese. Use Amap for routing, and the Alipay ride code to pay. For visitors, DiDi and metro are usually simpler.
🚄 Airport
Ningbo Lishe International (NGB) handles domestic + some regional flights; reachable by metro Line 2 or DiDi. For most international guests, arriving via Shanghai + high-speed train is faster and has more flights.

Riverside quarter of restored 19th-century buildings — a nice stroll by day, lively bars and restaurants by night. One of China's oldest opened ports.
🚢 River cruise 三江游
A relaxed river cruise departing from the Old Bund (Laowaitan) waterfront — glide along the meeting of Ningbo's three rivers past the lit-up skyline. Especially lovely at night, and a perfect way to round off an evening at the Old Bund. Check sailing times locally or ask your NIDE host.
🌙 Moon Lake 月湖 · Yuehu
Willow-lined lake and park ribboning through downtown — pavilions, bridges, easy walking. Pairs well with a Tianyi Pavilion visit nearby.

Historic gate-tower and the old-street lanes around it — snacks, tea houses and souvenirs.

The largest natural lake in Zhejiang, ~20 min from downtown — cycling, boating, temples and resort hotels for a half-day escape.

Care in China is good and affordable, but hospitals are busy and English is limited outside dedicated foreigner units. Know where to go before you need it.

For a business trip, travel with a policy that covers China and, ideally, medical evacuation. The three names most widely recognised and accepted for direct billing at international-tier hospitals in China:

Price varies with age and cover level. Direct billing usually applies only at private international hospitals — at public ones (incl. the Beilun clinic) you normally pay first and claim later, so keep every 发票 (fāpiào). Carry your insurance card + passport and save the 24h emergency number offline.
